GRADE 4 MATH INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS
According to the Missouri Learning Standards (MLS), fourth grade will focus on the following three critical areas:
- Develop an understanding and fluency with multi-digit multiplication.
- Develop an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers.
- Understand that geometric figures can be classified based on their properties, such as having parallel sides, perpendicular sides, particular angle measures.

Mathematics Practices
|
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. |
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. |
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. |

FOURTH GRADE END-OF-YEAR EXPECTED MEASUREABLE SKILLS ATTAINMENT
Math Practice Assessments
- Fourth Grade Operations and Algebraic Thinking - Students need to use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems. They also need to gain familiarity with factors and multiples and to generate and analyze patterns.
- Fourth Grade Number and Operations in Base Ten - Fourth graders have to use place value understanding to perform multi-digit operations and to generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers.
- Fourth Grade Common Core Fractions - Fraction equivalence, ordering, decimal notation for fractions and fraction building.
- Fourth Grade Measurement and Data Practice - Require fourth grade students to solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from larger to smaller units and to understand concepts of geometric angles.
- Fourth Grade Common Core Geometry Practice - Fourth grade students are expected to draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles.
