GRADE 1 MATH INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS
According to the Missouri Learning Standards (MLS), first grade will focus on the following four areas:
- Develop an understanding of addition, subtraction, and strategies for addition and subtraction within 20.
- Develop an understanding of whole number relationships and place value, including grouping in tens and ones.
- Develop an understanding of linear measurement and measuring lengths.
- Reason about attributes of, and composing and decomposing geometric shapes.

Mathematical Practices
|
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. |
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. |
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. |

FIRST GRADE END-OF-YEAR EXPECTED MEASUREABLE SKILLS ATTAINMENT
Math Practice Assessments
- First Grade Operations and Algebraic Thinking - Students need to add and subtract within 20, to represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction, and to understand and to apply properties of operations.
- First Grade Number and Operations in Base Ten - Extend the counting sequence, understand place value and use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract.
- First Grade Measurement and Data Practice -Require first grade students to measure lengths indirectly and by iterating, to tell and write time and to represent and interpret data.
- First Grade Common Core Geometry Practice - First grade students are expected to be able to reason with shapes and their attributes. They should distinguish between defining attributes, create composite shapes and partition circles and rectangles into two or four equal shares.
