GRADE 2 MATH INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS
According to the Missouri Learning Standards (MLS), second grade will focus on the following four critical areas:
- To extend understanding of base-ten notation.
- To build fluency with addition and subtraction.
- To use standard units of measure.
- To describe and analyze shapes.
Instructional Overview

Mathematical Practices
|
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. |
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. |
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. |

SECOND GRADE END-OF-YEAR EXPECTED MEASUREABLE SKILLS ATTAINMENT
Math Practice Assessments
- Second Grade Operations and Algebraic Thinking - Students need to represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction, to add and subtract within 20 and to work with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication.
- Second Grade Number and Operations in Base Ten - Understand place value and use place value knowledge to add and subtract.
- Second Grade Measurement and Data Practice - Require second grade students to measure lengths in standard units, to relate addition and subtraction to length, to work with time and money and to represent and interpret data.
- Second Grade Common Core Geometry Practice - Second grade students are expected to be able to recognize and draw shapes with specific attributes, to partition a rectangle into rows and columns and to partition circles and rectangles into two, three or four equal shares.
