GRADE 3 MATH INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS
According to the Missouri Learning Standards (MLS), third grade will focus on the following four critical areas:
- Develop an understanding of multiplication and division within 100.
- Develop an understanding of fractions.
- Develop an understanding of area and of rectangular arrays.
- Describe and analyze two-dimensional shapes.

Mathematical Practices
|
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. |
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. |
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. |

THIRD GRADE END-OF-YEAR EXPECTED MEASUREABLE SKILLS ATTAINMENT
Math Practice Assessments
- Third Grade Operations and Algebraic Thinking - Students need to represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division, to understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division, to multiply and divide within 100 and to solve problems involving the four operations and explain patterns in arithmetic.
- Third Grade Number and Operations in Base Ten - Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.
- Third Grade Common Core Fractions - Students need to develop understanding of fractions as numbers. Grade 3 expectations regarding fractions are limited to denominators or 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8
- Third Grade Measurement and Data Practice - Require third grade students to represent and interpret data, to solve problems involving measurement and estimation of intervals, to understand concepts of area and to recognize perimeter as an attribute of plane figures and distinguish between linear and area measures.
- Third Grade Common Core Geometry Practice - Third grade students are expected to be able to reason with shapes and their attributes.
